PRR 8612, AS-24M, 1965
Title:  PRR 8612, AS-24M, 1965
Description:  Slope to Works. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 6 June 1965. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8612, #8613, and another unit whose road number is not recorded. All were built by the American Locomotive Company. #8612 and #8613 are AS-24M's rated at 2,400 horsepower each. #8612 was constructed in June of 1956, while #8613 was built in August of the same year. They're serving as tail-end pushers on a mixed-cargo freight train that's passing under the 24th Street Bridge on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the helpers will be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for further assignment. PRR Lancaster Excursion, #8 of 10, 1965
Title:  PRR Lancaster Excursion, #8 of 10, 1965
Description:  Excursion. Here is an original photo that I took at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, around three-thirty on 17 October 1965. The "Horseshoe Curve Excursion" ~ sponsored by the Lancaster Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society ~ has stopped at the Curve for excursion passengers to visit PRR K-4S "Pacific" #1361. Meanwhile, a mixed-cargo freight train rounds the Curve on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8612 ~ an AS-24M built by the American Locomotive Company in August of 1956 and rated at 2,400 horsepower ~ is serving as one of its tail-end pushers. Partially visible at the far left is one of the Excursion's passenger cars; visible at the far right is venerable Milepost 242. (#8 of 10)
