A BNSF westbound holds at Basta (west Fullerton, California) for the afternoon onslaught of Amtrak and Metrolink passenger trains before continuing on to its final destination of Hobart Yard in Los Angeles. The power on the headend consists of BNSF Dash 9-44CW 753, TFM SD70MAC 1611, NS Dash 9-40CW 9153, NS SD70 2520, BNSF Dash 9-44CW 1023 and BNSF Dash 9-44CW 4507 - six engines and five paint schemes!

Description:
Metrolink train 656 accelerates out of a scheduled stop at Orange on its way to Oceanside, California. On the headend today is F59PH 860, one of two units (and the only F59PH) painted in the new scheme. This is the third paint scheme worn by the 860 since it was first painted by EMD in July 1992 for delivery to Metrolink. (The first passenger car is one leased from Salt Lake City's Utah Transit Authority pending delivery of Metrolink's new Korean-built cars.)

BNSF 7200 - Rocket Site, CA - 3/12/10
Description:
Along the northern edge of Edwards Air Force Base, in Californias Mojave Desert, runs the former Santa Fe line that connects Richmond, in the Bay Area, with Barstow and points east. At milepost 788.3 is a spot called Rocket Site and it is here, with the Tehachapi Mountains as a backdrop, that we see train G-PASBAR4-05 (Grain - Pasco, WA, to Barstow, CA) hustling east behind a trio of ES44DC diesels, and a single Dash 9-44CW (with another pair of Dash 9s shoving on the rear). BNSF 7200 on the point wears the orange and black scheme introduced in 2005.

On June 13, 2008, the 1904-built Southern Pacific depot in Tehachapi, California, burned to the ground. At the time, the station was undergoing an extensive restoration. But the good news is that a replacement station is nearing completion, as seen in this March 12, 2010 view.

Wrecked Wheels
Description:
At about 9:30 PM on Saturday, February 20, 2010, a BNSF Railway westbound derailed and caught fire inside Tunnel 9 - The tunnel at the bottom of the famed Tehachapi Loop. The location made fighting the fire difficult, and it took over 24 hours for the conflagration to be extinguished. Weeks later, a collection of wheels from the covered hoppers that burned are stacked near the tunnel, and stresses and heat have left many of them deformed. Along with the deformed wheel, note the bent axle as well.

Description:
In California, Amtrak trains look different - the blue and silver "Pacific Surfliners" and, further north, the blue, silver and yellow "San Joaquins" and "Capitol Corridor" trains. This is due to the way trains operated within California are funded - Note the "Amtrak California" lettering on F59PHI 2003. This sharp-looking four car train arrived in San Jose as train #537 (Sacramento to San Jose), and will depart 65 minutes later as train #542 (San Jose to Sacramento). Along with Amtrak service, San Jose's Diridon Station is also served by CalTrain (heading north to San Francisco) as well as Santa Clara County's VTA light rail service ... All part of California's rail renaissance.

The rear platform on observation car "Tioga Pass" is the place to be as Santa Fe 4-8-4 3751 heads straight through the maze of trackwork at the throat of Los Angeles Union Station. The short four-car train is heading for San Bernardino, where it will spend the night before returning to Los Angeles the next day. Metrolink MP36PH-3C 892 has been added behind the steamer for "protection" in case there are any problems en route.

A variety of rail equipment await their fate at Adams Steel in Anaheim, California, on June 26, 2010. Among them is BNSF Railway GP9 1621, which rolled out of EMDs factory in February 1956 at Northern Pacific 252, and was later numbered 1875 while in service on the Burlington Northern. A former Santa Fe GP, which belongs to the scrapper, sits to the side of the 1621, and another former BN GP is at the opposite end of the passenger cars.

Description:
Amtrak train #860 is scheduled to operate from Oceanside to San Bernardino. But on June 26, 2010, the train originated in San Clemente due to some major track work being performed north of Oceanside. Here we see train #860, with F59PH 869 on the point (and MP36PH-3C 892 on the rear) running about a half-hour late as it crosses the mighty Santa Ana River, and also crosses from Orange into Anaheim (as the river also serves as the city line).
